Peaberry/HDSDR/Tablet/Win 8.1 ?

Postby W4MMP » Wed Jan 21, 2015 3:02 pm

Hi,
Would those of you who are running HDSDR on Windows 8.1 come back to this post and let us know your thoughts on how well it is working?
Micro Center is almost giving away Winbook tablets (7 inch). One down side is the 7" has only 1GB of ram. The upside is the Winbook has a USB port.

At any rate my thinking is that the combination might make a pretty neat portable QRP station.

(I have no affiliation with Micro Center or Winbook. Just thought I would pass this along)

ARM-based or x86 based?
If ARM, skip it.

seems to be some under-powered Atom cpu in a SoC package.
Check to see if the SDR SW you will want to run can really work on that. (i.e. have enough cpu horsepower).

Why would an ARM processor be questionable? Have you been following the mcHF project? http://www.m0nka.co.uk/ It is based on an ARM MCU. Is this the same thing? It is having quite good results even as the firmware is being constantly updated and becoming more complex.

As far as the tablet use, I think I would look into joining the Peaberry and tablet via a bluetooth connection and forgo the USB.

Basically "ARM" is not enough to qualify a chip. Different core versions, hardware fpus, NEON instructions support...
What I want to say is that by default, an underpowered Windows ARM tablet would likely be at the very least an uphill battle.
Something running linux with optimized drivers, code... will perform better out of the box.

That said, this is only my personal take on it, and is only worth the price of my opinion (free ;-) ).
Thanks.

Hum, Ok, how does one make that work (without modifying the Peaberry)? Nothing smacking me across the face on this one.

Hi,
Interesting information, but the original question was: Who is using HDSDR with the Peaberry on Windows 8.1 and how is that going?

I use HDSDR with the Peaberry on Win 8.1 x64. Other than the pain with unsigned drivers for my virtual audio cable SW, things just work. Nothing special.

Hi,
Thanks for the Win 8.1 info. I believe I will purchase on of these tablets. It may just work. If not then I have a tablet I can use for other things.
